We're Les and Madeline Troyer from Sugarcreek, Ohio, heart of the Amish country. When the last of our five children married and left home, we decided to redo our two upstairs bedrooms with antique oak furniture. A bed, washstand, chest of drawers, child's round top desk -- piece by piece we furnished the first room. At last it was complete except for one item. I wanted a trunk to put at the foot of the bed. We looked and looked and looked and at last we found one in Johnson City, Tennessee. We bought it, took it home and put it in the spot reserved for it. That was in 1992. I went often to that room, rubbed my hands over the fine old wood and examined the interior which had been redone in a small blue cotton print. One day the thought came, "I wonder if I could redo a trunk?" Shortly after that we bought an old trunk in Lynchburg, Virginia. We had little idea how to go about it, but for two months both Les and I worked on redoing that trunk inside and out. When it was finished, we gave it to one of our daughters for Christmas. Then we set about to do a second and a third, and a fourth. As our inventory grew, we asked ourselves, "What will we do with all of these trunks?" Our house was too small to keep all of them, so we sold some, and a part time career was launched.
In the past, we have shown our trunks in Colonial Antique Mall in Kingsport, Tennessee, the Antique Mall in Boone, NC, and at Metrolina in Charlotte, NC. We moved to Sugarcreek in June of 1998 and took several months off to get settled and play with the grand kids. Now we are restoring again. At this time we do not have a store, nor do we display our trunks in any antique mall. We offer them only through this web site. Restoring is a labor of love reserved for our spare time, so we will never be able to offer a huge inventory. I add a trophy plate to each trunk which bears my name and the year it was restored. I look at trunks wherever I go and search the internet for new trunks sites continuously, but I have never seen any other restorer who uses quite the combinations of material and brass hardware that my trunks have. The Ralph Lauren® fabrics are all discontinued patterns, so you may never see another just like those we currently offer.
